Detailed description of Smock Golf Course

Smock Golf Course is a Public 18 hole golf course located in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The course was designed by Bob Simmons. Smock Golf Course first opened for play in 1976.

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees the course plays to 6,806 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 4,534 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 1, a par-5 that plays to 566 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 13, a par-3 that plays to 162 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 1, the 566 yard par-5 challenge is the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 13, the 166 yard par-3.

Smock Golf Course has large greens, but they are often so firm it is often difficult to hold your shots. The signature hole is #17, a 429-yard, par 4, which requires a long iron to a shallow green with a lake on the left and a bunker to the right. Another difficult hole is #14, a 362-yard, par 4, requiring a long tee shot over a creek to a fairway with trees and out-of-bounds stakes come into play on the left, then an approach shot to a well-bunkered green. Water comes into play on eight holes.

After playing Sham GC yesterday, I was warmed to try another 18 holes before the cool stuff makes it way here this afternoon. This 1976 Bob Simmons design is a fairly open layout that has a little creek wandering throughout the course, creating a rolling type layout that gives it's challenge. The conditions were very much softer than yesterday with limited roll on fairways, holding greens and soft sandtraps. They had all four (4) tee boxes out so you could choose between the Blue @ 6,837yd / 73.3 / 130 down to Reds @ 4,447ydsd / 66.8 / 112 on this traditional Par 36/36 walkable layout. I chose the Whites @ 3,245/3,193yds / 70.3 / 124 and with the 40 degree 10mph wind I believe it was a good choice. Starting out with the Hcp 1 hole (570-410yds) at 540yds, this Par 5 is a tough finish with the fairway running out 140yds from the green and water in front. The #3 Par 4 at 365yds is another hole where the fairway (water right) ends 100yds from the elevated green. The #4 Par 3 at 170yds has a creek in front of this elevated green, pond to the left and sand on the right with run out apron, short front. The #5 a 555yd Par 5 is just a long narrow straight fairway leading to a small round green. The #7 Par 3 was playing 196yds from the Whites and has LH/RH front traps guarding this elevated green that rejects any short shots. The #8 is a interesting 387yd Par 4 that has an straightaway runout fairway and a green located separately off to the right, like a island green. You need to land at the 130yd marker to view the green pass the RH trees and there's a creek crossing in front of the green, Enjoy. The Back 9 starts out with their Hcp 2 an 532yd straightaway Par 5 with the fairway running out at the 140yd marker and another creek crossing in front of the elevated green with LH/RH front traps. The #11 is a 392yd Par 4 that has a 150yd forced carry off the tee to another elevated green with a sand trap across the front. The #13 is a nice short elevated 162yd hole that will make you feel good about finally using a iron on a Par 3. The #15 Par 3 played 196yds to this elevated green, creek in front and into the wind from the Whites was just plain tough today and don't land short. The #17 is a straightaway 429yd Par 4 with pond on the LH side of the green that receives any shot missing the LH fringe of the very elevated green. The #18 at 505yds starts out with a 200yd carry needed to hit the fairway from the Blues and its uphill all the way to the (you guessed it) elevated green. Great layout with the creek winding throughout the course giving that rolling effect to break up a would be, boring layout. Eneded up shooting 42/41 w/30 putts as I start heading back up North to my Winter Wonderland.

Smock is an Indianapolis city course that continually is in pretty good shape. Fairly wide open, with a challenging creek that pops up on 13 holes and must be reckoned with.
